GARLIC VARIETY COMPARISONS

Efford 1982/83

SUMMARY

Nine varieties were planted in the autumn and spring. Five other varieties were planted in the autumn only. All of the cloves planted in the autumn over-wintered well, except Morado (from Chile) and cloves from Taiwan. Bulb size at harvest of most varieties was good, but spring planting tended to give better quality.

OBJECT

To assess varieties of garlic for production in Southern England.

LAYOUT

One block of all varieties for autumn planting, and one block for spring planting.
Spacing: 1.83m beds, 4 rows per bed. 450mm between rows, 200mm between plants.
Planting Depth: 25mm soil above top of clove.

October - mid	Cloves hot water treated - 46ºC (114ºF) for 2 hours
October 28	Spike rotovated to planting tilth
November 19	Autumn treatments planted
November 26	Weed Control: Propachlor (as SB Propachlor 65) at 6.7 kg/ha Chlorthal-dimethyl (as Dacthal) at 6.2 kg/ha Paraquat (as Gramoxone) at 2.8 l/ha

February 11	Cloves for spring planting placed in cold store
March 7	Spring treatments planted
March 17	Autumn treatments top dressed with 140 kg/ha N
May 13	All top dressed with 194 kg/ha N
May 27	After hand weeding, applied Chloridazon with Chlorbufam (as Alicep) at 4.5 kg/ha
August 2	All plots lifted and taken into dryer.
