Garlic Germination

We’ve had a number of enquiries from growers asking about germination. To give you some idea of germination times I thought it might be useful to publish a graph of the growth rates of our own garlic varieties. The varieties are in 6 groups—3 hardneck and 3 softneck and all were planted in pots in a polytunnel on the weekend of the 18/19 October 2003. A list of varieties is shown below and the growth recorded is a simple measure of total leaf length per plant. Hope this helps some of you!

Artichoke: Shantung Purple, Chinese White, Red Janice, Xian, Polish White, Red Toch, Japanese White, Greek, Inchelium Red, Lorz Italian, California Early, California Late, Asian Tempest. Creole: Morado, Music. Purple Stripe: Metechi, Chesnok Red, Brown Tempest, Bogatyr, Persian Star, Red Rezan, Siberian.  Silverskin: Rose d’Auvergne, Thermidrone, Rose du Var, Nootka Rose. Porcelain: Georgian Fire, Georgian Crystal, Zemo, Leningrad. Rocambole: Roja, German Red, GSF.

 

The January 2004 edition of The Royal Horticultural Society’s magazine ‘The Garden’ features an article by Lia Leendertz called ‘A New Taste for Garlic’. The article is based on varieties grown by Garlicworld and photos were taken here at our Lincolnshire growing site.
